A Woman May Be Suffering From Alcoholism and Depression

“I don’t know what the heck to do anymore.  The more I drink, the more depressed I get.  And if I try to stop drinking, I get depressed.”  This statement was made by Julia, a thirty-seven year old secretary, while talking to Jean, her best friend.  When Jean heard this, she stated that she recently read an article about alcoholism and depression that stated that both of these medical conditions can happen in the same individual.  And according to the author of this article, if a person is an alcoholic and is depressed, both conditions need to be treated.  Then Jean asked Julia why she doesn’t go and talk to her doctor about her drinking and her depression.  As stated by Jean, “Julia, if you have a drinking problem and you are suffering from depression there is hope because both of these medical conditions can be treated successfully.”
