The Swiss Music Box

7:10 am Home

Introducing music into cuckoo clocks was another radical idea that originated in Switzerland. The theory was that apart from the usual projecting bird, the Swiss introduced some music to accompany it. Thus, when an hour rang, people would get to see the proverbial projecting cuckoo, but instead of the cuckoo call, they’d hear a popular tune such as The Happy Wanderer and Edelweiss.

Deviation from Cuckoos

Going away from the traditional belief of having a cuckoo as the centerpiece of the clock, people at Switzerland started getting innovative. Things other that a common cuckoo figure started being used in the clocks. These ranged from other birds to various other artworks. Chalet Swiss cuckoo clocks also used various other statuettes and figurines that used to project when a new hour was born.
