Technology has changed the way we have to look at book publishing in several very fundamental ways. For instance, when computers came on the scene, they allowed book publishing to be much more streamlined- there was for example, no need for any sort of manual typesetting anymore as computers did this automatically and for mere peanuts. The internet has also allowed  Online Book Publishing  to be made possible. All that is needed to read one (or even make one!) is a computer and an internet connection.
