Having New Thoughts
August 17, 2009 4:45 am ReferenceIf you want to have creative new thoughts, you can start by challenging the assumptions and premises of existing thinking on a subject. For example, when people argue about who they should vote for, there is an implicit premise that both sides share, which is that they should vote at all. To challenge that, you might ask whether there is a better way to affect political change, or even whether it is better to work on personal change rather than spend the time trying to change the society around you. Asking these kinds of questions may or may not yield anything useful, but it is one way to have more creative new thoughts.
